ABSTRACT
The geopolitical position of the Middle East has a strategic value in the functioning of Eurasian trade routes. Accordingly, security issues in the region directly affect the realization and sustainability of trade projects. Israels Palestinian policies disrupt the security balance in the Middle East, posing risks to major trade projects such as the Belt and Road Initiative, the IMEC Project and the Development Road. Recognizing that trade and security are inextricably linked, this study examines the current state and future of these projects from a security perspective. Based on a comprehensive literature review using qualitative analysis, this study evaluates the effects of instability in the Middle East on trade routes. The study reveals that trade projects in the region will be at risk of instability unless security issues are resolved. The first part of the study discusses the relationship between trade and security in a conceptual framework. Then, Israel’s Palestinian policies are briefly touched upon and it is stated that these policies negatively affect the security of the Middle East. In the last part, major trade projects are discussed and how these projects are affected by Israel’s policies. The findings show that the Southern Corridor of the Belt and Road Initiative has a fragile structure, the IMEC Project cannot be realized due to security problems, and the Development Road offers a more reliable alternative under current conditions. If security and stability cannot be ensured in the Middle East, it is anticipated that it will be difficult for trade projects to operate permanently and effectively.
